Weggis - Model 5860/2

This is an AM receiver fabricated in 1956 by the Swiss company S. A. VELECTRA AG that was based in Biel/Bienne. It was designed to operate as a cable receiver of an high frequency broadcast system called "HF-TR" (Hochfrequenz Telefonrundspruch (in German) or Télédiffusion à haute fréquence (in French)). This system, was used to broadcast hi-fi radio using common telephone lines as the transmission media. Six channels were transmitted over six different frequencies namely: 175 , 208 , 241 , 274 , 307 and 340 KHz. The HF-TR broadcast system was in operation in Switzerland between 1940 and 1998.

The radio has seven "piano" buttons. Six to select one of the preset HF-TR channels and one to turn off the set. The pick-up input in the back of the set is selected by pressing simultaneously buttons "5" and "6". It has a volume control button (on the left), a bass and treble control button (double function button on the right). The front panel is marked both in German and in French (front view).

The radio electronics is straightforward (see schematic JPG, 105KB), containing only a tuned radio frequency amplifier (with six tuning settings), a detector and an audio amplifier. The receiver contains the following valves:

A special thanks goes to Markus Meier for all the useful information he provided about the receiver. Markus maintains a very interesting web site dedicated to Biennophone-radios: Meine Sammlung von alten Biennophone Radios.
